Special note: with all the buzz about birth certificate trutherism, I am reposting a blog dealing with this very thing.
Is Obama confirming his U.S. citizenship still a valid issue? There has been an ebb and flow to this whole thing, and contrary to what people may think, this is not a Republican or conservative issue. Democrats have been very much in the mix of it all: from the initial filing challenging Obama’s citizenship in the courts to the petitioning of the Supreme Court – has been the work of Phillip J. Berg, a Democrat and a Hillary supporter.
This is not to say that the issue of Obama’s citizenship hasn’t impacted those in the conservative and libertarian camps. The point here is that the left is trying to portray this as an exclusively “right” issue.
But in the end, through the drama of the courts and the buzz on the internet, the end result has been always the same – nothing.
Is this issue dead? I thought it was. But then freshman Republican Rep. Bill Posey of Florida introduced a bill requiring documentation of presidential candidates to prove citizenship.
“Opponents of President Obama are raising the birth certificate issue as a means of questioning his eligibility to serve as president,” Posey said in a statement. “This bill, by simply requiring such documentation for future candidates for president, will remove this issue as a reason for questioning the legitimacy of a candidate elected as president.” GOP congressman introduces birth certificate bill
Where is this bill now?
The Library of Congress
H.R.1503
Title: To amend the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 to require the principal campaign committee of a candidate for election to the office of President to include with the committee’s statement of organization a copy of the candidate’s birth certificate, together with such other documentation as may be necessary to establish that the candidate meets the qualifications for eligibility to the Office of President under the Constitution.
Sponsor: Rep Posey, Bill [FL-15] (introduced 3/12/2009) Cosponsors (None)
Latest Major Action: 3/12/2009 Referred to House committee. Status: Referred to the House Committee on House Administration.
The bill is stuck in committee, and most likely will stay there as long as Democrats have control of the House. Notice there are no cosponsers to the bill – there isn’t any incentive to push it through. So again, nothing.
But then Camille Paglia, a liberal and supporter of Obama raises the issue of the President’s citizenship out of nowhere, seemingly with nothing to gain by it. Writing for Salon –
Yes, there were ambiguities about Obama’s birth certificate that have never been satisfactorily resolved. And the embargo on Obama’s educational records remains troubling. But I am still waiting for hard evidence about the host of other charges that are continually being hammered against him — from his alleged fidelity to the crypto-tactics of Chicago leftist Saul Alinsky to the questions raised by right-wingers about the production of Obama’s two memoirs. Out of respect for the presidency, conservatives need to put up or shut up about these issues.
I am sure that it was not her intent, but Camille’s statement, Yes, there were ambiguities about Obama’s birth certificate that have never been satisfactorily resolved confirms that in her mind, the issue is still valid.
The question that comes to mind is this: if even Democrats see this as a valid question, why hasn’t this issue been satisfactorily resolved? The President should have quelled this controversy long ago, and the press should have pressured him to do it.
But what should be the response from conservatives?
-
1) Obama’s unresolved question about his citizenship should not be the silver bullet in confronting his leftist policies. This is a pipe dream. We need to address failed leftist policies with superior conservative answers in the arena of debate and positive action.
2) We must not forget the hatred and radicalism of the left during the Bush years up to now. The spewing of hatred toward Bush and Palin, and the pension for conspiracy theories like the stuff about 9/11 and the Saudis should be ample reasons not to follow their example.
3) Good, well reasoned debate is a positive thing. The issue should not be swept under the carpet – the President can end the controversy today. But it should not be the focus of those advocating a better America through conservative ideals either.
4) Passage of the bill, or something similar proposed by Rep Posey should help to avoid repeating this mess again.
5) We must never fall into a trap by letting those on the left define conservatives! We must keep the focus on ideas, issues and action. This is where the left falters – they would rather confine the discussion to ridicule.
Ronald Reagan is the perfect example of conveying ideas instead of getting involved with petty arguments. He was able to explain the fallacy of liberalism and model the superiority of conservatism: his positive message coupled with his character and convictions changed the course of our nation.
