Major Papers Remove Obama’s Comment: ‘I’ll Be Honest, There Are Countries Where a Single-Payer System Works Pretty Well’

New York Times

New York Times

Here is a quote from the President’s speech on June 15th to the American Medical Association:

“Let me also say that—let me also address a illegitimate concern that’s being put forward by those who are claiming a public option is somehow a Trojan Horse for a single-payer system. I’ll be honest; there are countries where a single-payer system works pretty well. But I believe—and I’ve taken some flak from members of my own party for this belief—that it’s important for our efforts to build on our traditions here in the United States. So when you hear the naysayers claim that I’m trying to bring about government-run health care, know this: They’re not telling the truth.”

What is interesting is that the statement, “I’ll be honest, there are countries where a single-payer system works pretty well” has been omitted from majors newspapers. CNSNews.com reported the omission and gave excerpts from three major newspapers as an example.

From the Washington Post on page 2:

“In his speech, Obama said, ‘Let me also address an illegitimate concern that’s being put forward by those who are claiming that a public option is somehow a Trojan horse for a single-payer system. … When you hear the naysayers claim that I’m trying to bring about government-run health care, know this: They’re not telling the truth.”

On the front page of the New York Times:

“‘The public option is not your enemy,’ Mr. Obama said. ‘It is your friend, I believe.’ Saying it would ‘keep insurance companies honest,’ the president dismissed as ‘illegitimate’ the claims of critics that a public insurance option amounts to ‘Trojan horse for a single-payer system’ run by the government.”

And on page 14 of the Los Angeles Times:

“‘Let me also address an illegitimate concern that’s being put forward by those who are claiming that a public option is somehow a Trojan horse for a single-payer system,’ Obama said. ‘But I believe, and I’ve taken some flak from members of my own party for this belief, that it’s important for our reform efforts to build on our traditions here in the United States.”

Now I wonder…why would those bastions of liberalism and fawning lackeys of Obama dare to delete his comment? Aren’t they cheating the adoring public? Well, I guess it comes down to the fact that there aren’t any countries where a single-payer system works pretty well. Yes, the fawning lackeys of Obama were of course protecting the object of their fawning from certain ridicule and embarrassment.

Fawning lackeys do come in handy, don’t they? It’s too bad that Mr. Gibbs didn’t have any fawning lackeys:

An extra note: you know, I always find it interesting when a person prefaces a statement with, I’ll be honest. It’s just got to be Freudian.

UPDATE! 6/25

Obama admits that he wouldn’t stay within his own plan and that it wouldn’t provide the best care:

President Obama struggled to explain today whether his health care reform proposals would force normal Americans to make sacrifices that wealthier, more powerful people — like the president himself — wouldn’t face.

The probing questions came from two skeptical neurologists during ABC News’ special on health care reform, “Questions for the President: Prescription for America,” anchored from the White House by Diane Sawyer and Charles Gibson.

Dr. Orrin Devinsky, a neurologist and researcher at the New York University Langone Medical Center, said that elites often propose health care solutions that limit options for the general public, secure in the knowledge that if they or their loves ones get sick, they will be able to afford the best care available, even if it’s not provided by insurance.

Devinsky asked the president pointedly if he would be willing to promise that he wouldn’t seek such extraordinary help for his wife or daughters if they became sick and the public plan he’s proposing limited the tests or treatment they can get.

The president refused to make such a pledge, though he allowed that if “it’s my family member, if it’s my wife, if it’s my children, if it’s my grandmother, I always want them to get the very best care.”

  1. It pays to have your own propaganda arm. It gives me great delight that even the doctored polls are slipping in spite of their Iron Curtain lies and all around best efforts. This whole plan plays to the worthless, the lackey and the nothing. It would only be embraced by the fiscally retarded and those with wealth envy. Even the rich can not fund this mess along with all of the other largess. There is no such thing as a free ride and these checks will need to be cashed with interest. The thing is the government is to stupid to adjust their spending and cut back on vote buying programs like the rest of us. After this one term wonder leaves office this program will be like herpes, impossible to kill regardless of inefficiency and it will only grow as they allow coverages to everyone, even illegal aliens in an effort to buy votes. Worse yet is this is conditioning everyone to look to the socialist government to do everything for them, soon there will be no personal responsibility left.

  2. When is the media going to be held accountable for their manipulation of the American people? Anybody remember the show Max Headron? This is what that show was all about the media’s manipulation of the people. Freedom of speech does not cover lying and leaving out an important statement is lying!!!!!Why didn’t someone ask him “Name one country” cause he can’t!!! I have been in the business side of healthcare for 30 years and I know how the Canadians and Brits think of their system. The rich get what they want and need but John and Jane Q Public and their children, get whatever and whenever the government decides they should have it. Medical cost were reasonable until the government tried to contain it with Medicare PRO review (because LBJ and the congress stole the money from the system to finance Cival rights programs and never paid it back) and they have risen dramatically everytime the government steps in, because the private insurers jump on board to pad their pocketbooks. So let the government step out and let capitalism work, because it does when left alone.
