You may or may not know the story about Ashley Biden and her alleged cocaine use. You also may not know that she was arrested in 1999 for marijuana possession and again in 2002 for obstructing a police officer. It is not my intention to draw attention to it – except that it would be a good thing to pray for Ashley and her parents. It is a family thing, and even though she is 27 and campaigned for her father, which I believe makes her fair game – it’s better left alone.
My intention here is to point out the hypocrisy of the MSM and the frenzied left in their treatment of 17 year old Bristol Palin. The unbridled hatred released in their coverage of Bristol (and of course her mother) is repulsive. The questioning by Tara Banks and Larry King of ex-fiancee Levi probing into the private area of sex borders on the creepy – well, let’s just admit that Larry King was creepy.
And please: can anyone get more creepier than David Letterman’s imitation of a pervert?
This is not the first time. Remember the frenzy by the press when the Bush daughters and under age drinking was an issue at the beginning of Bush’s presidency? Even O’Reilly was in on it – but he has made it clear that he will not touch this issue with Ashley. And we all remember how Vice Presidential candidate John Edwards in the 2004 campaign tried to use the sexual orientation of Cheney’s daughter for political gain.
What I would like folks to do is ask the question: what if Ashley Biden was Bristol Palin? Think about it. What would the MSM and the frenzied left do if it was Bristol who was suspected of cocaine use and was arrested several times in her past?
The answer is an easy one. But let me take it a step further. There is a video that is alleged to show Ashley snorting cocaine – a video made by her boyfriend (I know, another “boyfriend”). He was reported trying to sell it for several million, and dickered the price down to $400,000. As of right now, there have been no takers.
There is no doubt in my mind that it if was Bristol on that video, top dollar would have been paid faster than Nancy Pelosi can lie when she knew about waterboarding.
Using Bristol as the poster girl that abstinence doesn’t work – takes a mistake made by a young person and politicizes it. Can you imagine using Ashley Biden as the poster girl for legalizing drugs – since in Ashley’s case abstinence from drugs doesn’t work?

Generally I do not approve of coverage of Ashley Biden because of how I feel about exploitation of families, but this is fairly well done so I take my hat off. I will likely not be mentioning it on my own blog. We have to stop exploiting families. You do a decent job here, though, of pointing out the hypocrisy in the media. People make mistakes. I can forgive Ashley Biden. Your post doesn’t attack her or her father. It’s decently done to demonstrate a point that we want the media to be fair in their coverage. This call for fairness is not a call for the reputations of liberals to be similarly destroyed. It is a call for all reputation destruction of families in politics to cease. Good candidates with skeletons in their closet will stop running for public office if this doesn’t stop. It’s good for the country on MANY LEVELS when we stop attacking families.
Good job. I give you a B+ for this.
The crowd would be chanting “crucify” if she were a conservative’s daughter. You’re right, it’s disgusting and vehement however I truly don’t care. She’s 27 years old. She’s a woman who makes her own decisions and therefore her father shouldn’t be held liable for her, HOWEVER it makes you wonder- how she was raised. if they look at illicit cocaine use as ok, then makes you wonder- where does her family (namely her father) draw the line?
I just love the false polls of the new regime touting obamas agenda, confidence and popularity. The double standard of the left continues from the pre-civil rights movement when they were the party of segregation and discrimination. The press is so far in the tank that if any member of the Palin clan even saw a movie with some coke in it, it would be hypocrisy but at best a baby Marxist gets caught and they will get a pass by being cool like those Hollywood types…. Hey they may even get to go to rehab and hang out with them. This above all else proves the total irrelevance of the press. Of course with their inflated egos they can not see they are naked in their stupidity, just like “The Emporer’s New Clothes…”

You know you can’t have it both ways!! Hypocrisy breeds contempt and the GOP is rampant with hypocrisy!!
You can’t project yourselves as the “FAMILY VALUES” party, ostracizing anyone with acceptance in their Heart as a Liberal and then whine when it blows up in your face.
You can’t FORCE Abstinence programs on the Country, calling it the ONLY true method of elimminating Teen Pregnancy issues while pushing into the lime light Sarah Palin, who stumps for Abstience Only as we see her 17 year old daughter pregnant!!
This is not some new principal! If Rush came out over the years with empathy and care for those suffering from Drug Addiction, his own Felony arrest and revelation of Drug abuse would have received empathy.
When you RANT repeatedly that “ALL drug abusers should be thrown in Prison” what do you expect the reaction to be when it is revealed he is a Drug Abuser??? The true irony there is as Rush rails on the ACLU as the “lowest form of sh-t”, Rush was more than happy to have the ACLU represent him in his case to block the release of his Medical records!!
Hypocrisy, thy name is the GOP.
Apparently it was known when it took place. But going back that far into the past is ridiculous. You are just trying to find something to strike back with. If the Palins are going to go around and try to tell others how to live they should start with their own families.
I tend to disagree with your statement. Maybe a few people push for these issues using their life issues as examples. Maybe, Sarah pushed for abstinency based on her daughter’s bad experiences (disagree with “only” method). I agree with you on Rush because he showed no tolerance of drug abusers until caught (total hypocrisy) which was not the case with Sarah. Her daughter getting pregnant was not a conscious decision Sarah made. It was her daughters. Parents can teach the best we know how but if a child doesn’t get it…..they don’t get it. They don’t come with manuals nor can they be expected to be perfect little robots programmed by us (what a dull world that would be). Just because the daughter got pregnant doesn’t mean that Sarah did not teach her “family values”.
Great article by the way.
You know I remember a while back where you called me a “hypocrite” for my views on Palin and her family. I can see some of the comments people made commend you for your post. But I half to wonder, How is your post’s any different from my statements I gave you in your earlier blogs. You criticized me for attacking the Palin’s and now you do the same. The future will unravel it’s self. There is a good reasoning why ” In Gods way” why she is not in office. Too much drama. This is why the scripture I gave you, about having your family, your entire family in the balance of God. Just think if Sarah was in office and all this drama unfolded. What we need more scandal. Let me paint a picture of things to come. You write how Bristol has become the poster child for teen mom’s. What you don’t know is she will turn against her mom. You may not believe me, but it will happen. you can not see this because you are merely star struck. Jim I am currently working on a blog that discusses all of this. Weather you like me or not, or agree with me. I hope you will read it.
RationalNotRhetoric this is the problem with people on the Left. You believe that if you strive to have a standard that you must be perfect. Any deviation from that standard is hypocrisy.
The real question is why do you have no standards? Because people are flawed doesn’t mean that we condone that activity openly. Bringing Rush’s drug addiction up is typical. Since he is not perfect he is obviously not worthy of discussing politics. He has never been tough on drug addicts. To say so shows you either have never listened to him or you are just dishonest. Taking his words of context don’t prove your point either. I am not one to stand up for Rush, but I am tired of people using this ad hominem attack.
The only thing forced on the country is this love affair of getting children ready for sex before puberty. This is whats wrong with this story. Girls are being portrayed as sex objects everywhere you look. We have come to accept the constant marketing of sexual promiscuity to our daughters and then when we dare say that we want them to wait, we are hypocrites for not pushing them out to go sleep with everyone in the neighborhood.
I am a libertarian and believe in social liberal issues, but I have some standards. So I ask again, why do you have no standards? Why do you think that 14 year old girls should be joked about having sex on national TV? I thought denouncing that was basic human decency and not a political issue. Shame what we have become.
NotRationalRhetoric, I find it amazing how you manage to eat when you are so consistently full of crap.
So many strawmen in one post shoud get you fined by the fire inspector.
SM1 Ostracized? Who?
SM2 Sorry, Palin does not and never has pushed an “abstinence only” curriculum. If you have to lie to create this boogeywoman for everyone to be afraid of, at least come up with a creative lie.
SM3 Rush never to my knowledge “ranted” to “Throw all drug users in jail!” I seem to recall him advocating punishin powder cocaine posession as harshly as crack posession, but that is not the same thing. Nuance.
Do you think you could try again? This time with actual, you know, FACTS?
If Ashley Biden was Bristol Palin, we’d never have even known she’d gotten pregnant.
The problem is this: The right wing has been deemed (much by their own hand) to be the party of Christianity. To the left Christianity means lead perfect lives or you’re a hypocrite. So now any kind of moral frailty by a right winger is proof of hypocrisy. That’s an impossible, inhumane standard to hold people to, expecially young people. That’s the real problem.
