Have you ever tried to encourage people to ask questions? What does everybody always say? I used to teach school, and I have said it – “There is no such thing as a stupid question.” But there is just one problem: my students proved me wrong – there are a lot of stupid questions! I was actually stupid, in saying there were no stupid questions.
That brings me to our new Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton. You know, the one on her European tour who insulted folks by mispronouncing their names, admitted that she didn’t understand European democracy, and gave a cheap looking gift with the wrong Russian word on it.
It’s important to learn from our mistakes. And one would think that this experience, would have been the heads up on the importance of preparation. This does make us look a little better, and shows a certain respect to those they visit.
But then there is that visit to Mexico. Just think how a little preparation would have helped, when she made an unexpected stop at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

The image of Our Lady of Guadalupe was miraculously imprinted by Mary on the tilma, or cloak, of St. Juan Diego in 1531. The image has numerous unexplainable phenomena, such as the appearance on Mary’s eyes of those present in the room when the tilma was opened and the image’s lack of decay.
Mrs. Clinton was received on Thursday at 8:15 a.m. by the rector of the Basilica, Msgr. Diego Monroy.
Msgr. Monroy took Mrs. Clinton to the famous image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which had been previously lowered from its usual altar for the occasion.
After observing it for a while, Mrs. Clinton asked “who painted it?” to which Msgr. Monroy responded “God!” CNA
Hillary is the Secretary of State – isn’t she expected to, well, be prepared? Can one imagine if Condi Rice or Colin Powell asking such a, such a, I’m going to have to say it – stupid question? Think of the frenzy of the press if Sarah Palin asked that stupid question.
Hillary Clinton missed the significance of one the greatest historical events in Mexico, which directly contributed to it’s Catholic character. It is an amazingly touching story, filled with the miraculous – as it is today with “18 – 20 million pilgrims visiting the Basilica every year, making it Christianity’s most visited sanctuary.” To find out more – Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Leaving the basilica half an hour later, Mrs. Clinton told some of the Mexicans gathered outside to greet her, “you have a marvelous virgin!”
Her parting remark is quite ironic – that evening Hillary received the “highest award given by Planned Parenthood Federation of America — the Margaret Sanger Award, named for the organization’s founder, a noted eugenicist.”
“Who painted it?” is a probing question: may she discover the Painter of the Culture of Life.
