Archbishop Chaput responds to Pelosi-Pope meeting
CNA
Denver, Colo., Feb 19, 2009 / 07:31 pm (CNA).- Archbishop Charles Chaput of Denver is in complete agreement with the message that Pope Benedict XVI delivered to Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday. The archbishop also went so far as to say that since she disagrees with the Church on the “black and white issue” of abortion, she should not present herself for Communion.
The comments by Archbishop Chaput were made following Nancy Pelosi’s meeting with Pope Benedict, at which the Pope reminded the Speaker of the House that all legislators, but especially Catholics, are bound to protect human life from conception to natural death.
FOX News’ Neil Cavuto invited Archbishop Chaput to give his reaction to the Pope-Pelosi meeting on Wednesday afternoon.
Cavuto began by pointing out the disparity between Pelosi’s statement about the meeting and the Pope’s.
“I got very different reads from both the Pope’s message of that meeting and the speaker’s, but the gist of the Pope’s is that, she has a duty to respect life, what did you make of that?” said Cavuto.
Pelosi to Remain Pro-Abortion

Those wondering what impact Nancy Pelosi’s meetings with Pope Benedict XVI yesterday, and San Francisco Archbishop George Niederauer 11 days ago have had on the Speaker, have to wonder no more. They haven’t had an impact, at least not on her positions on the life issue.
Pelosi’s spokesman, Brendan Daly confirmed with me just minutes ago that she has no plans to change her position on abortion.
“She has said, as it says in the Democratic party platform, she wants to reduce the number of abortions,” said Daly. “But she will remain pro-choice.”
While much was made of Pelosi’s meeting with the Pope yesterday, few knew about her meeting 10 days prior with her own local ordinary.

The strong leadership of Pope Benedict XVI seems necessary if the U.S. avoids the path of many European Countries.
I would like to see strong consequences
against Catholic politicians who are
hypocritical to their Church and attempt
to mislead their constituents.
It’s time to bring God back into the fabric of our government and society.

I agree that Catholic politicians can’t have it both ways. They either stand up for Catholic beliefs that are really important or not. If you are going to tout abortion, don’t go around bragging that you are Catholic. That is not only for Pelosi, but Kennedy, Kerry, Biden, and alll the rest.
